Beautiful Things · Drawing skills · Pilot draft
Artists don't draw what they think something looks like. They draw what they see. Look more than you draw, and wobbly lines are fine.
1Look more than you draw
Pick a typewriter. Put your eyes on one edge and move them slowly. Let your pencil follow along. Look at the paper only now and then.
2Find the big shapes
Squint at an old TV until the details disappear. Draw the biggest shape first, then the screen, then the knobs. Small details go last.
3Draw a pet from a painting
Choose a cat or dog on the AWWW Wall. Build it from shapes, then make it look alive.
The painting I chose:
4Light and dark
Press lightly, then a little harder each time. Fill the boxes from the lightest to the darkest. Then add one dark shadow and one bright shine to your pet.
One thing I really saw
Something you only noticed because you were drawing it.
